NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country in Timaru

We had some super performances at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs at Ashbury Park in Timaru this weekend. We had three boys who joined with over 800 other athletes from all around New Zealand.

Noah Davis and Zasha Marshall had a tough race in a field of 116 Year 9 Boys over 3000m of hills, flats and hurdles. Noah placed 80th and Zasha 96th and both ran very well and finished strongly.

Sam Meecham then had a superb race to finish 11th in the Junior Boys Under 16. After being in 20th after 2km he ran a strong second lap to take 9 places and finish just outside the top 10 in New Zealand! Over 120 boys from all around the country ran the 4km race.

All the boys enjoyed visiting Timaru Boys High School to see the Jack Lovelock (1936 1500m Olympic Champion and World Record Holder) statue and Oak Tree.

On Sunday the three boys ran for Canterbury in the Inter-Regional Relays and Sam took the lead for his Canterbury A team before they just slipped to 3rd in the last lap behind Wellington and Waikato-Bay of Plenty.

A big thanks to Paul Davis and Mr Meecham for helping with the team!

Rippa, Basketball and Cross Country

We have had a busy week of sport and some of the action is as follows…..

Rippa Rugby: Our Year 5-6 Mixed team scored some great tries to beat the St. Peter’s boys’ team on Tuesday in the South Zone Rippa Rugby tournament. The team will now play in the Canterbury tournament on Monday July 1st at English Park.

South Zone Year 7-8 Basketball Tournament today:  Both our girls and boys’ team matched off against St. Martins today at our gym. The St. Martins girls were too tall and skillful to beat our team but our boys showed some silky skills to reverse the tables on our neighbours. The boys will now play in the Canterbury tournament on July 29th at Pioneer Stadium.

Year 0-4 Cross Country Challenge: This is on Tuesday 2 July and our first team training is on Thursday (tomorrow) 13 June on the Senior Campus from 3.15-3.35pm for those who can make it. For a team list and the notice, see here: Year 0-4 HLCS TEAM NOTE Cross Country Challenge 2019

NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country is in Timaru this weekend and we have Noah Davis and Zasha Marshall competing in the Year 9 Boys’ race and Sam Meecham in the Junior Boys U16. All three will run for Canterbury teams in the Inter-regional Relays on Sunday morning – all events being held at Ashbury Park. For live streams of their races, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxP8yoQ7VHI&feature=share

Year 5-8 Canterbury Cross Country: This is on next Wednesday 19 June at Halswell Quarry and we have 15 runners competing.

Y5/6 South Zone Basketball and Aims Sausages

Year 5/6 South Zone Basketball:  Our Boys and Girls Year 5/6 Basketball teams competed against Thorrington in the South Zone Basketball Tournament today. Both games were very close and Hillview showed great staying power to win through in both contests.

The girls were behind 12-8 at half time but proved too strong in the second half to win 22-18, winning the second spell 14-6. Players of the Day were Micahlei Timo and Ropeta Mene-Vaele for strong defence and causing turn-overs.

The boys came up against a taller and older Thorrington team but also finished stronger to win 16-6 in a close tussle where the ball didn’t often find the basket. Players of the Day were Noah Dean and Archie Nielsen – Noah for constant attacks and Archie for great marking and defence.

Thanks to Marita Stocks (girls) and Mr Dowall (boys) for taking the teams and to James Onslow for refereeing.

The teams have now qualified for the Primary Sports Canterbury Indoor Tournament at Pioneer Stadium on Monday 12 August.

Girls: Hillview 22 Thorrington 18

Boys: Hillview 16 Thorrington 6

The Year 7/8 South Zone Tournament is on Wednesday 12 June, 11am-12.30pm at our Gym.
