Winnie tops the South and Duathletes in hot form at Ruapuna

Winnie Palamo won both the Long Jump and 80m Hurdles at the South Island Secondary Schools Athletic Champs in the weekend at Aorangi Park in Timaru. She was also a close second in the 100m – what an outstanding effort from her. She heads to New Plymouth this weekend to help Canterbury win the Inter-Provincial Athletic Champs.

Sam Meecham ran a PB 10.07 in the 3000m to place 7th. Both Winnie and Sam were in the Under 14 grade.

Over 1200 students competed in the Primary Sports Canterbury Duathlon at Ruapuna on Monday. In warm and calm conditions Hillview athletes were in hot form. For Year 5/6 they competed over a 2km run, 6km cycle and 1km run with Year 7/8 having a 9km cycle.

Silas Jones had an exceptional race in the Year 5 Boys to place 3rd (out of 144 finishers!) after briefly taking the lead on the last 1km run.

Elliot Graves was 4th in Year 7 Boys (out of 160 finishers!), a super performance!

Matthew Fairhall was 5th in the Year 8 Boys after getting to 2nd at one stage (136 finishers) with Max Blockley 9th in the same race – a great effort.

Elliott Perrett was 12th in the Year 7 Boys and was the fastest on the bike (out of 160 boys!).

Bonnie Graves  did extremely well to place 14th (104 finishers) in the Year 5 Girls and Noah Davis had a a very strong race also in the Year 8 Boys to finish 19th. Willow Cook just missed out on the top 20 with a solid performance to get 21st in the Year 8 Girls.

Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletic Finals – Saturday 17 March, Rawhiti Domain

Winnie Palamo was one of the most outstanding athletes in her grade at the Secondary School Athletics on Saturday. Allowed to enter a maximum of three individual events, she won all three! She is now the Under 14 100m , Long Jump and 80m hurdles champion! An outstanding effort! We thank God for her gifts and talents that were on display!

She also brought the Under 14 Girls’ 4 x100m relay team (with Hannalise Manuel, Jess Telea and Paris Tipple) home in 4th place, only 0.49 seconds from 2nd! The team did well to take almost 2 seconds off their time set on Tuesday in qualifying in 6th place.

Sam Meecham contested the 3000m final on Saturday and had an excellent race to place third and beat his 3km track PB by a massive 47 seconds to record 10.11 for the 7 and a 1/2 laps

Jacob Tauamiti finished 7th in Under 15 Boys’ Discus final after qualifying 8th.

Former HLCS student Oliver Graves(STAC) broke both grass track records for the 400m and 800m winning convincingly the  Under 14 Boys’ grade.

Winnie and Sam will now compete in the South Island Secondary School Athletic Champs being held in Timaru next weekend:

Sensational Swimmers!

Well done to our Year 5-8 Swimming team who competed in the South Zone Swimming Champs today at Jellie Park.

The students all tried their best and did Hillview proud. A big thanks to the parents who supported us.

For the first time in Hillview history ( and possibly South Zone history) Hillview won all four of the relays! What a sensational effort. We really do praise God for the chance to display gifts and talents and the hard work and many hours put in by many of our swimmers.

We also has some superb individual results with 11 individual titles to Hillview swimmers and doubles to Noah and Tessa Davis and Elliot Graves.

The Canterbury Champs are on Thursday 5 April at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston.
