Year 5/6 Basketball Boys Champions

Our Year 5/6 Basketball Boys copied their Year 7/8 counterparts by winning the Primary Sports Canterbury Indoor Tournament yesterday – winning their pool and then beating Kaiapoi North 12-8 in the final. The Girls enjoyed their Canterbury tournament and had one win and a draw.

Thanks again to Mr Harrison for coaching the teams and to the parents who supported and transported.

Sam Meecham wins again!

Sam Meecham took out the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country at Halswell Quarry yesterday – posting the fastest time of nearly 900 runners over the 3km course of 10.34 when winning the Year 8 Primaries race.

Matthew Fairhall (16th) and Max Blockley(20th) both Year 7, qualified with Sam for the Primaries vs. CAIMS runners at Roto Kohatu Reserve on Wednesday 5 July. Elliot Graves (21st) had an excellent run in the Year 6 Boys’ race.

We have had lost going on and lots of sport coming up too….here are some details:

Y7/8 Rugby and Netball Trials

We had six girls in the South/South East Zone Netball trials last week at Hillview. Congratulations to Madison and Jessica Telea who have made it into the second trial to be held on Thursday 22 June for the Primary Sports Canterbury Year 7/8 Netball Rep. teams.

We have four boys trialing for the U48 and U65 kg Primary Sports Canterbury Year 7/8 Rugby Rep. teams. All the best to Tom Harrison, Charlie Hickey, Jamie Ehau and Jacob Tauamiti who trial on Wednesday 21 June.

Gymnastic Success

Renee Mein (Step 6) and Emma Ford (Step 3) competed in the Primary Sports Canterbury Artistic Gymnastics Championships last Wednesday. Emma took a third in the Vault and Renee was 2nd in the Floor and the Beam – excellent results! For full results, click here: Competitive results 17

Cross Country

Secondary Schools: Luke Mitchell competed in the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in the weekend at Ascot Golf Course, QEII Park. He ran hard to gain 88th place in the Junior U16 Grade but was unwell – so a great effort. He was also selected as reserve for the Canterbury Relay team that won the Gold Medal in the Inter-Regional Relay races. Former student, Oliver Graves (Y9 at STAC) had a great race for 22nd in the Y9 Boys grade.

Year 5-8 : Hillview has nine competitors at the Primary Sports Canterbury Championships at Halswell Quarry on Wednesday 21 June. We wish them all the best as they compete in fields of 130+ from runners all over Canterbury. Any Year 7/8s who make the top 20 will race at Roto Kohatu Reserve on Wednesday 5 July.

Year 0-4 XC Challenge:  On Tuesday 4 July we host 300 Year 0-4 runners in the third annual Y0-4 Cross Country Challenge. We have 48 runners in the eight grades and we had training today for them. For a team note, click here: Year 0-4 HLCS TEAM NOTE Cross Country Challenge 2017

Rippa Rugby

Our Year 6 team will compete at the Primary Sports Canterbury Championships on Monday 3 July at English Park. They have been training well and are looking forward to the challenge of taking on other schools for the chance for win a trip to Wellington!


It is great to see the Year 2-4 Miniball happening in our gym on Tuesdays and Thursday with Mr Harrison and his team of student helpers. We also have a number of teams playing on Friday evenings in the Wharenui competition at Middleton Grange as well as a Boys and Girls Year 9/10 team in the Secondary Schools’ competition – usually playing home games at Hillview.

Winter Sports

As well as the above, we have 26 teams playing weekly sport on Wednesdays (Y9/10) and Thursdays (Y5-8) and 6 x Saturday Hockey teams and 8 x Netball teams playing each week.
