Athletics Team for South Zone Athletic Champs – Wednesday 12 November (ppd 17 Nov. ) -Hansen Park

Please find below a FIRST DRAFT of our Hillview Athletics Team to compete at the South Zone Athletic Champs. The team has been worked out using results from BOTH Wednesday 22 and Wednesday 29 October results. Also please note the following:

– children can only compete in a MAXIMUM of THREE (3) events for the day (a relay may be one of them)

– children can only compete in ONE SPRINT EVENT – ie they cannot run both the 50m and 80m (9 and 10yrs) or 60m and 100m races (11, 12, 13 years)

– there is NO 9 Years Shot or Discus

Touch, Cricket and Minball underway and Athletic Records Updated

Summer is here, almost, and we have a number of summer sports teams competing under the Hillview banner out of school. Mr Harrison has a number for Cricket teams playing for the Sydenham Club on Saturdays and we have three school teams in the Year 5/6 Action Cricket Trophy on Fridays in school time. Again we have a number of teams in the Year 3/4 Mini-Ball on Wednesdays at Pioneer and we also have 12 touch teams playing in the SMART Touch Module at Waltham Park on Thursdays (Year 0-8).

A reminder the Junior Athletic Day is on Friday 28 November on the Junior Campus.

Athletic Records Broken and Finalists


As well as super performances from so many children, we had some 5 school records broken.

1. 10 years boys long jump – first by Callum Edwards who added 2 cm to Sam Gemmell’s 2013 record of 3.80m and then Jamie Ehau extended the record to 3.90m!

2. Winnie Palamo set a new record in the 10 years girls’ long jump by jumping 3.55m – the old record was 3.48m set by Paris Croy in 2009 and Fia Lai-Kong in 2012.

3. Fia Lai-Kong set a new mark of 8.52m in the 12 years girls Shot (3kg) beating the old mark of 7.93m set by Fia Palamo last year.

4. Fia also set a record in the 12 years discus by throwing the 750gm discus 24.65m to add almost 5m to Jemesa Landers record of 19.68m set last year.

We look forward to more records being challenged on Wednesday evening!

Senior Athletics Day – Finalists for next week

Well done to all children who competed today in the 9yrs and up Athletic qualifying. There were some super performances and the final House Relay was very exciting with Hillary just edging Snell on the line of the last if 18 laps with Rutherford third and Sheppard in fourth.

“Silver Sam” and Term 4 Sport

Well done to Sam Meecham who won two Silver Medals for Canterbury at the Inter-Regional Cross Country at Hanmer Springs at the end of last term. Sam won an Individual Silver in a massive sprint finish and also led the Canterbury A team to a Silver in the Teams’ race behind Wellington A. Luke Mitchell was a super seventh in the Year 7 Boys’ 3600m which helped the Canterbury B team to a Bronze in the Teams’ race. Tom Harrison, Willow Cook and Matthew Fairhall all put in huge efforts in the Year 5 races also.

Term 4 Sport

Again, it is a busy term. Mr Harrison has a number of Junior Mini-ball teams playing and also a number of Cricket teams playing for Sydenham on Saturdays. We have ten touch teams playing in the SMART touch module at Waltham Park, starting next Thursday, 23 October.

Year 9/10 Sports starts this week with Volleyball on Tuesday and Touch/Indoor Football on Wednesday. See this week’s draw below – we need help with transport at the Year 8 Camp has two school vans – please contact Mr Hay.

The Year 5-10 Athletic Sports are on next Wednesday, 22 October, at School with the Year 5-8 finals on Wednesday 29 October from 4.30-7.30pm at school.
