South Zone Swimming Success

Congratulations to our team of 33 children Year 5-8 children who competed at the South Zone Swimming Champs on Thursday at Wharenui Pool. It was a new experience for many and quite a few of the children were nervous. All swimmers did really well and just to make it to this level was a big achievement.

There were some excellent performances from Hillview swimmers. Of note was Oliver Graves, winning his two events (9 years boys’ Freestyle and Breaststroke) and bringing the 9 years relay team into second place. Jessica Frost swam an exceptional race to win the 10 years girls’ Breaststroke. James McRae swam an intelligent race to win the 11 years boys’ Breaststroke and showed real strength and endurance to place 2nd in the Open 50m Butterfly. Maddie Morrow showed good style to win the 9 years girls’ Breaststroke and our 11 years relay team were champions – well done to Luke Mitchell, Eva Stark, Keight Copeland and Brendan Morgan.

Secondary School Athletics Results

The Canterbury Secondary Schools Athletics Prelims were held at Rawhiti Domain on Tuesday 18 March. We had a team of 23 athletes competing against the best in Canterbury. The competition was very tough, especially as we had  time to prepare due to our two postponements of our sports.

Three of our students managed to qualify for the finals on Saturday with some exceptional performances.

Dominic Mattson was the 6th fastest qualifier in the U14 Boys’ 100m running 13.18 seconds. Dominic also had an excellent long jump of 4.75m to miss qualifying by only 7cm. Pedro Langlangi threw the Discus 28.64 metres to be the 5th qualifier in the Junior grade and Renzo Childs was the 7th qualifier in the Junior Boys’ High Jump with a huge jump of 1.55m.

Leah Blondell won her 100m heat in 14.70 seconds but missed qualifying for the semis by 0.2 seconds. The Under 14 Girls’ relay team broke 60 seconds and were 9th of the 15 teams and ahead of larger schools like Cashmere  and Avonside High.

A big thanks to our parents for helping with transport and support – Suzanne McLister, Chris Landers, Karen Walker, Neil Hawkins, Naiuli Palamo.

Grace Perrett was a marvelous 7th in the 10 years girls and was the fastest girl on the bike! Oliver Graves was a creditable 12th in the 9 years boys. Well done team – the splits make very interesting reading and they really show you where you need to work on for next year.
