South Zone XC Results

Well done to our whole Cross Country team – we won 4 out of the 8 grades in the teams’ events at the South Zone Cross Country yesterday – it was a real team effort and in some cases replacement runners made the difference as other schools failed to have the required 5 finishers.

Our Champion teams were:

Year 5 Girls: Winnie Palamo, Amelia Bader, Emily Galbraith, Lauren Copeland, Jessica Frost, Leah Robinson

Year 6 Boys (1st=): Luke Mitchell, Michael Hermans, Sam Gemmell, Ephraim Stocks, James MacRae, Zac Carr

Year 7 Girls: Bonnie McLister, Kirstin Steer, Abigail Hau, Kate Copeland, Katie Carr, Charlotte Boyes

Year 8 Girls: Jemesa Landers, Samantha Fairhall, Rachael Winder, Hayley Buckley, Elena Hawkins, Rongapai Tickell

Year 9 and 10 Winter Sport underway

Our Year 9 and 10s had their first taste of Winter Sport today and we had some firsts…..our first ever Badminton and Table Tennis teams competed – two teams in each sport.

One of the table tennis teams had a very close match against Lincoln losing by a countback on the total of points scored – after the matches were tied 3 wins each, then total of games were tied also, so points had to be counted! Our other table tennis team played a home match in C2 and went down 4 matches to 2 against a team of Year 13 girls from Marian College.

Well done to our two Netball teams that had wins  – we have a mixed Year 10 team and  Year 9 team who defeated Girls High at Hillview 23-15.

Cross Country in the Snow

Our Year 5-8 team ran the South Zone Cross Country in the snow today….not to mention mud, deep water and lots of slosh and very cold temperatures but also sun.

There were some marvellous performances as children were trying to achieve their own goals. Luke Mitchell retained his title and Josh Walker had the race sewn up but unfortuantely got snagged in the finish rope. The Year 8 girls were impressive with all 6 finishing in the first 14 runners!

Congratulations to all those children who did their best and ran their hardest and to those that also were placed in the first six and will represent the South Zone and Hillview at the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country Championships on Wednesday 19 June, again at Halswell Quarry.

Unofficially (results not through yet), from memory, those making the first 6 were:

Year 5 Boys: Oliver Graves – 3rd

Year 6 Girls: Zoe Gilling – 5th

Year 6 Boys: Luke Mitchell 1st, Michael Hermans 2nd

Year 7 Girls: Bonnie McLister 3rd, Kirstin Steer 4th

Year 7 Boys: Xavier Marshall  4th

Year 8 Girls: Jemesa Landers 3rd, Samantha Fairhall 4th, Rachel Winder 5th

Year 8 Boys:  Joshua Walker 2nd, Aidan Gunther 4th

Mr Norton will write a training programme for them and there are two training sessions at Halswell Quarry on Tuesdays 4 and 11 June – a van will leave at 3.20pm (4.00pm start at the Race start) and return by 5.00pm.

Cross Country News

Secondary Schools’ Cross Country – Tuesday 28 May

Well done to our twelve Year 9 and 10s who ran today in cold conditions at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Cross Country at Halswell Quarry.

Our best results came from Renzo Childs, 24th in the U14 Boys, Josiah Rees, 24th in the U15 Boys and Beth Walters, 30th in the U15 Girls. All of the students gave of their best and we had six runners in the U14 Boys and four in the U15 Boys, meaning that we had a team result – many bigger schools didn’t have teams – so well done. Official results and times will be out later.

Year 5-8 South Zone Cross Country – Wednesday 29 May

At this stage, this event is still on and we have 48 children running. Children are to meet at school at normal time and then meet Mr McKenzie at the Rocks and then boarding the bus to Halswell Quarry – PLEASE BRING WARM GEAR and a change of socks/shoes and a raincoat!
