Cross Country is coming…..

Hi everyone

cc photoOur School Cross Country is coming in less than three weeks (Thursday 18 April) – all details are on the Cross County Page of this blog and a note went home with the school newsletter.

Training: With three weeks to go, it is a good time to get some training in. To really get an advantage it is best to try some running at or above your race pace as well as some general jogging. Three to four times a week is plenty – so have a recovery day between.Try to do all training on grass if possible – eg Hansen Park

For example, if your race is 2km, it would be good to have a session like this:

2-3 mins warm up jog with some dynamic stretching (leg swings, lunges, lower calf leg raises) and then a 40m sprint to get the body ready f0r action!

1km at faster than your 2km race pace

4-5 mins. “Grandma Jog”, little drink and recovery

1km at faster than your 2km race pace

2-3 mins warm down walk/jog with some static stretching (long calf, hamstrings, thigh)

This sort of sessions covers your distance but also trains your body to run at a faster pace.

Hope it goes well!

Jayzin triumphs at Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics

Jayzin Cleghorn is the best Discus thrower in Canterbury for his age. Today, at Rawhiti Domain, in the finals of the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics, he unleashed a huge throw of over 31 metres to win the Junior Boys’ grade. His excellence in the field events was backed up later in the day when he threw the 5kg shot over 10 metres to take third place.

Distance runners Josiah Rees and Renzo Childs ran solid races in their 1500m races and then Farran Landers ran a very well judged 3000m to take 11th out of 18 finishers in the U14 Boys’ grade final. Well done to all of our qualifiers! Former student, Daena Vas Viegas (now at Rangiora New Life School as  a Year 11) was outstanding, winning both the Intermediate Girls’ Shot and Discus.

PSC Triathlon Results and Zone Swimming

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to GRACE PERRETT who placed 2nd out of the 69 finishers in the 9 years girls race at the Primary Sports Canterbury Triathlon at Pegasus yesterday. This is a phenomenal performance! Full results are on primarysportscanterbury.org.nz web page – results section

The rest of the team also performed very well against competitors from all over Canterbury. Our results were as below.

The South Zone swimming sports were held today and the team did well with some close relay finishes (two seconds and two 3rds possibly) and some other great results – from memory, those to finish in the first two of their final and make it to the Canterbury Champs on 11 April (to be confirmed): Oliver Graves, Eva Stark, Charlotte Boyes, Jessica Frost, Hayley Buckley, Isaac Boot, Liam Hickey and Zac Ayers – apologies if anyone was missed.

Our team of 22 triathletes enjoyed competing at Pegasus today in warm and still conditions in the Primary Sports Canterbury Triathlon with over 870 other competitors.
